Nursing Scholarships

At The TLR Foundation, we’re truly grateful for the care nurses provide to patients and their families. Every day, nurses support people through diagnosis, treatment, transplant, and recovery. They bring skill, compassion, and calm to some of the most challenging times patients and families will ever face.

Supporting nursing education is one of the most meaningful ways we can strengthen that care. TLR’s Nursing Scholarships support nurses to complete a Master of Cancer & Haematology Nursing at the University of Sydney, helping them become specialists in cancer care and leaders within their teams.

TLR's Nursing Scholarships

The TLR Nursing Scholarships are named in memory of Trace Richey and Allan Frenkel, two people whose lives and stories continue to shape our work. These scholarships honour their legacy by supporting nurses to become specialists in cancer care and strengthening the care patients and families receive when it matters most.

Created through years of community fundraising and support, the scholarships are perpetual, creating impact that lasts well beyond a single nurse or year. The Trace Richey Nursing Scholarship has been awarded since 2022, and the Allan Frenkel Nursing Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2027. Together, they reflect a long term commitment to specialist cancer nursing and better outcomes for patients.

Empowering Nurses Through Scholarships

TLR’s Nursing Scholarships are about more than funding study. They’re about backing nurses who want to grow in their field and provide the highest level of care to people being treated for blood cancers.

By supporting advanced education in cancer and haematology nursing, these scholarships help nurses build deeper knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills. That expertise doesn’t stop with one nurse. It’s shared with colleagues, passed on through teams, and felt by patients and families every day.

The impact of these scholarships is best understood through the voices of the people behind them. Hear from Mary, TLR’s first scholarship recipient, alongside leaders in cancer nursing, on what this support means for nurses and the care they provide.
